Cartel Kidnappings: A Terrifying Reality
As a former New York Police Department lawman turned criminal defense attorney stated, “This is a likely – and sadly – worst case scenario.” Kidnappings are not just random acts of violence, but rather a calculated business strategy for the cartels. The treatment of their captives is nothing short of horrific, with reports of victims being waterboarded, electrocuted, and brutally beaten.
In a recent incident in Matamoros, Mexico, just across the border from Brownsville, Texas, four Americans were kidnapped. Tragically, only two of them survived the ordeal, but not without serious injuries that landed them in the hospital.
According to Jim Cavanaugh, a retired agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the proximity of Tucson to the southern border of the United States puts it at risk of cartel activity. In fact, the neighboring city of Phoenix was once dubbed the kidnapping capital of the country back in 2009.
These harrowing accounts serve as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by Mexican drug cartels. Their methods are brutal and unforgiving, leaving victims scarred both physically and mentally. It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in combating this epidemic of violence.
