Declan Coady, a 20-year-old U.S. Army Reserve soldier, spent his final hours in Kuwait reassuring his family through constant updates before a tragic drone attack took his life along with five other soldiers at the Port of Shuaiba. He was one of the youngest soldiers identified among the casualties and had enlisted in the Army Reserve as an information technology specialist in 2023.

His father, Andrew Coady, shared how the family received the heartbreaking news and how they initially did not believe Declan was involved in the attack due to his recent communication with his brother. The family was deeply touched by Declan’s dedication to keeping them informed about his well-being, even in the midst of danger.

Andrew mentioned that Declan’s unit had been deployed to Kuwait since September and was scheduled to return home in May. There was a possibility of him extending his deployment for nine more months, a decision that was still under discussion. Despite having the option to continue his studies at Drake University and commission as an officer after graduating, Declan chose to stay with his unit and pursue online classes in Kuwait.

Just a week before the fatal attack, Declan had been recommended for a promotion from specialist to sergeant, a rank he was awarded posthumously. His family spoke fondly of his love for service and dedication to his duties, highlighting his strong work ethic and commitment to his unit.

Declan’s sister, Keira, emotionally recalled the day he left for Kuwait and expressed her disbelief and sorrow over his sudden passing. She reminisced about their last conversations and the bond they shared, emphasizing Declan’s kindness and loving nature.

Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding Declan’s death, his family remembers him as a remarkable young man who touched the lives of those around him. Keira expressed her regret at not being able to tell him how much he was loved one more time and shared her thoughts on his bravery and strength during his final moments.

As they come to terms with their loss, the Coady family holds onto precious memories of Declan and cherishes the time they had with him. His legacy lives on through the love and admiration of those who knew him, forever honoring his sacrifice and service to his country.
