NASA made history in September 2022 by smashing a spacecraft into an asteroid called Dimorphos, the smaller asteroid in a binary pair orbiting a larger one called Didymos. This collision not only jolted Dimorphos slightly off course, slowing its orbit around Didymos by around 30 minutes, but it also revealed the potential to defend Earth from asteroids in the future.
Now, a new analysis has shown an even more profound impact of this mission. By altering Dimorphos’s orbit, NASA has managed to change the entire binary system’s path around the sun. This marks the first time in human history that we have altered the orbit of a natural object around our home star.
Published in the journal Science Advances, researchers explain how the initial collision with Dimorphos slowed the entire binary system’s solar orbit by around 12 microns per second. This groundbreaking discovery could significantly enhance our ability to deflect asteroids that may pose a threat to Earth in the future.
Lead author Rahil Makadia, a planetary defense scientist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign during the study, stated that this achievement demonstrates our capability to push asteroids away from Earth if they ever pose a danger. While Dimorphos and Didymos do not currently pose a threat, they were selected as targets for the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) to assess our planetary defense capabilities.
The DART mission involved crashing a spacecraft into Dimorphos at high speed to alter its orbit around Didymos. Scientists had hypothesized that this impact might also change the pair’s heliocentric orbit, and the recent study confirmed this hypothesis.
By combining radar measurements and observations of the binary system passing in front of the sun, researchers calculated a slowing of the system’s orbit by 11.7 microns per second, or around 370 meters per year. This data not only confirms the success of the DART mission but also provides valuable insights into the mass and density of each asteroid, aiding in our understanding of their structure and formation.
The upcoming Hera mission by the European Space Agency will take a closer look at the impact crater left by the DART collision, providing additional data to confirm and expand upon these findings.
