The Winter Paralympics in Italy kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at Verona’s Roman amphitheatre, showcasing a series of rhythmic performances celebrating uniqueness and participation. Artists with disabilities took the stage as athletes sat in a specially designed front row for wheelchairs.

The event marked the 50th Paralympics and was held less than two weeks after the conclusion of the Winter Olympics. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President, Andrew Parsons, expressed his concerns about the current state of the world in his speech at the ceremony.

“In a world where some countries are better known by the names of their leaders, I prefer to know countries by the names of their athletes,” Parsons stated. Italian President Sergio Mattarella then officially declared the Games open.

The theme of the ceremony, “Life in Motion”, was beautifully portrayed through various performances, including a soulful rendition of the national anthem and a captivating drum performance by Stewart Copeland and Cornel Hrisca-Munn.

The cauldrons were lit simultaneously in Milan and Cortina, with Italian wheelchair fencer Beatrice ‘Bebe’ Vio carrying the flame inside Verona’s historic Arena. The parade of athletes from 55 nations added to the festive atmosphere, with flags and national signs proudly displayed.

Despite some controversies surrounding the participation of certain nations, the spirit of unity and sportsmanship prevailed throughout the ceremony. The Games will feature a record 611 athletes from 55 countries, competing in 79 medal events across six sports.

As the Paralympics unfold from March 6 to 15 in Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo, and Val di Fiemme, the world will witness the extraordinary talents and resilience of para-athletes from around the globe.
