Microsoft and Google Confirm Continued Availability of Anthropic Claude for Enterprises and Startups

Enterprises and startups utilizing Anthropic Claude through Microsoft and Google products can rest easy as both tech giants have confirmed that the model will remain accessible to their customers. This assurance comes in the midst of escalating tensions between Anthropic and the Department of Defense under the Trump administration.

Microsoft was quick to offer reassurance to its customers by stating that Anthropic’s models will remain available despite the Defense Department designating the AI startup as a supply-chain risk. This move by the Pentagon came after Anthropic declined to provide unrestricted access to its technology for applications deemed unsafe by the company, such as mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.

The supply-chain risk designation, usually reserved for foreign adversaries, means that the Pentagon will no longer be able to use Anthropic’s products once Claude is transitioned off its systems. Additionally, any company or agency working with the Pentagon must certify that they do not utilize Anthropic’s models. Anthropic has vowed to challenge this designation in court.

Microsoft, a provider of various products to federal agencies including the Defense Department, stated that Anthropic’s models will remain available within its own products and to Microsoft customers. The company’s spokesperson confirmed that products like Claude can still be accessed through platforms like M365, GitHub, and Microsoft’s AI Foundry for non-defense related projects.

Google, known for its cloud computing, AI, and productivity tools, has also affirmed that Claude will continue to be available to its customers. The Determination by the Pentagon does not prohibit Google from working with Anthropic on non-defense related projects, allowing for continued access to Claude through Google Cloud.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers and partners can also continue using Claude for their non-defense workloads, as reported by CNBC. This aligns with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s statement regarding the limited scope of the supply-chain risk designation and its impact on customer usage of Claude.

Despite the challenges faced by Anthropic, Claude’s consumer growth has persisted, showcasing the demand and value of the model in various industries. The company’s refusal to compromise on its principles has not deterred its customers from utilizing Claude for their non-defense associated projects.
