The St. Elias Mountains in southeast Alaska are experiencing a significant transformation as over 100 lakes are expanding at an accelerating pace. Scientists predict that these lakes will quadruple in size over the next century or two, reshaping landscapes, creating new salmon habitats, and potentially altering the course of a major river.

Glacial hydrologist Eran Hood of the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau emphasized the importance of understanding the emergence of these lakes, as it will have a profound impact on downstream ecosystems. The region surrounding the St. Elias Mountains is losing approximately 60 cubic kilometers of ice annually. Glaciers shedding ice into lakes are receding faster than those terminating on dry land. Since 1986, lakes attached to glaciers in southeast Alaska have expanded by 60%, covering a total area of 1,300 square kilometers.

To investigate the extent of this expansion, a team of researchers led by glaciologist Daniel McGrath from Colorado State University utilized satellite imagery and estimates of ice thickness to map deeply eroded grooves hidden beneath glaciers. The results were startling, revealing 4,200 square kilometers of glacier-covered grooves adjacent to existing lakes. The researchers anticipate that the lakes will continue to grow until they fill these grooves, ultimately expanding to a combined size of approximately 5,500 square kilometers – equivalent to the size of Delaware.

Louis Sass III, a coauthor of the study and a glaciologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska, predicts that by the end of the century, these lakes will be fully developed. As the lakes expand, glaciers retreat, causing significant changes to the landscape. For instance, the Grand Plateau Glacier in Alaska’s Grand Plateau Glacier has retreated out of Alsek Lake, leading to the merging of Alsek Lake and Grand Plateau Lake. This change could potentially alter the course of the Alsek River, diverting its flow into the ocean at a new location 25 kilometers away.

A study by aquatic ecologist Jonathan Moore and remote sensing scientist Diane Whited found that as glacial lakes expanded in southeast Alaska, downstream river channels stabilized, allowing for the growth of willows and bushes on floodplains.

This transformation creates new habitat for salmon, with predictions suggesting that by 2100, 6,000 kilometers of river channels in southeast Alaska will become suitable for local salmon species. The lakes themselves will also provide spawning grounds for sockeye salmon, an important commercial species.

However, these changes will also bring about upheaval. For example, the Alsek River may shift its course as glaciers retreat and two lakes merge, creating a new path to the ocean. Additionally, expanding lakes have led to flash floods in Juneau, where a lake dammed by the Mendenhall Glacier overflows, causing damage to the town and forcing residents to build protective levees.
