Google Play Store Warning Over Battery-Draining Android Apps

Google Play Store Warning Over Battery-Draining Android Apps

Google Play Store is now taking steps to warn users about Android apps that have excessive background activity, which could potentially drain device batteries. This new feature is aimed at helping users make informed decisions before downloading apps that could cause battery issues. However, it is worth noting that certain functions such as music playback and location services are exempt from this warning.

Tech Advisor reported on this new development, highlighting that Google and Samsung collaborated to develop a metric for detecting excessive partial wake locks in applications. This metric is used to identify apps that have high background activity, leading to increased battery consumption.

Last November, Google had announced a “bad behavior threshold” for app developers, indicating that apps with excessive battery drainage could face consequences such as being excluded from recommended results or flagged with a warning. Now, with the implementation of this feature, users will receive alerts on the Play Store regarding apps that exhibit high battery consumption due to background activity.

The purpose of this warning system is to provide users with a heads-up about potential battery-draining apps before they download them. By raising awareness about these apps, users can make more informed decisions about which apps to install on their devices.

Apps that are deemed to have a clear function for the user, such as music playback or location services, are not subject to the warning. This ensures that essential functions are not mistakenly flagged as problematic due to their energy consumption.

Google plans to roll out this warning system gradually over the coming weeks, giving users time to adjust to the new feature. Additionally, users can stay informed about upcoming features for Pixel devices by checking out the March Pixel drop.
