Gary Lineker to Depart BBC’s “Match of the Day” but Extends Contract Through 2026 World Cup

UPDATED: After a long and successful tenure as the host of BBC’s flagship soccer series “Match of the Day,” Gary Lineker has announced his departure from the show at the end of the current season in May 2025. However, fans of Lineker will be pleased to know that he has extended his contract with the broadcaster through the 2026 World Cup.

Lineker, who has been with the BBC since 1999 and is the highest-paid presenter, will continue to be a prominent figure in BBC Sport. He will host the network’s coverage of the FA Cup in the 2025-26 season and will also lead the “Match of the Day’s” Top Ten podcast.

In a statement, Lineker expressed his delight in continuing his association with BBC Sport and thanked all those involved in making the contract extension possible.

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, praised Lineker as a world-class presenter and expressed the network’s happiness at having him lead their World Cup coverage and FA Cup broadcasts. Kay-Jelski also acknowledged Lineker’s significant contribution to “Match of the Day” over the past 25 seasons and assured fans that Lineker will be greatly missed on the show.

News of Lineker’s departure from “Match of the Day” follows recent reports of contract negotiations with the BBC. Lineker’s substantial earnings, reportedly around £1.35 million ($1.74 million) between 2020 and 2021, have drawn criticism along with his outspoken political views.

Despite facing backlash for his comments on social media, Lineker remains confident in expressing his opinions freely. He emphasized that he follows the BBC’s guidelines and believes that the network allows for more freedom in sharing personal views.

As Lineker transitions away from “Match of the Day” after an illustrious career, fans can look forward to his continued presence on BBC Sport through various projects and events, including the upcoming World Cup and FA Cup coverage.
