A tragic incident occurred this week in Queens, where a 57-year-old woman named Suzanne Schmeider was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver outside a social security center. The incident took place in broad daylight on Jamaica Avenue, as Schmeider was crossing the street mid-block in front of the facility. The driver of a dark-colored 2001 Lincoln LS hit her and fled the scene, leaving her with severe head and body injuries.

Schmeider, who lived just over a mile from the scene, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her daughter, Sydney, expressed her grief and appreciation for the police’s ongoing investigation into the matter. In an effort to cover funeral expenses and honor her mother’s memory, Sydney started a GoFundMe page.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the hit-and-run. Witnesses at the scene recounted the horrifying incident, with one security guard mentioning that the car was speeding and hit both Schmeider and a bus before driving off. Another guard described finding Schmeider lying on the ground, with only a single sneaker left behind as evidence.

The area where the accident occurred is known for people crossing mid-block, particularly those visiting the social security office. The speeding motorists on Jamaica Avenue pose a significant risk to pedestrians, as the street widens and gives the impression of a highway. Store owners in the vicinity expressed their sorrow and concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for caution and adherence to traffic rules.

The fleeing motorist, who violated the designated bus and truck only zone, is still at large. Signs posted by the Department of Transportation warn drivers against entering the area during certain hours, highlighting the importance of road safety. This tragic hit-and-run comes shortly after another incident in Brooklyn, where a 4-year-old boy was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver.

The incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives. Authorities are working diligently to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice, while the community mourns the loss of those who have tragically lost their lives in these senseless acts.
