Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently commended India’s decision to bring Sanju Samson back into the playing XI as an opener during the second half of the T20 World Cup 2026. Ponting acknowledged the Indian team management for showing faith in Samson despite his lack of form with the bat.

Initially dropped from the playing XI for India’s opening T20 World Cup 2026 match against the USA following a disappointing home series against New Zealand, Samson was only included in the team for the game against Namibia due to Abhishek Sharma’s illness. However, with Abhishek struggling for runs, Samson was recalled to the playing XI for the crucial Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe, a decision that proved pivotal in India’s campaign.

In an interview with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review show, Ponting praised India for sticking with Samson at a crucial juncture in the tournament. He emphasized the importance of receiving the backing of the coaching staff and captain, highlighting that a simple gesture of support can do wonders for a player’s confidence and performance.

Samson’s impressive performances as an opener in the latter stages of the T20 World Cup 2026 further justified India’s decision to persist with him. The dynamic batsman played crucial knocks, including a quickfire 24 off 15 against Zimbabwe, an unbeaten 97* off 50 against the West Indies, and impactful innings in the semifinal against England and final against New Zealand.

Ponting also touched upon Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy during the T20 World Cup 2026, acknowledging the challenges that come with leading a team while facing struggles with personal form. Despite Suryakumar’s own batting inconsistencies, he managed to lead India to their historic victory in the tournament, showcasing resilience and determination.

In nine innings during the T20 World Cup 2026, Suryakumar scored 242 runs at an average of 30.25 and a strike rate of 136.72, with one half-century. Ponting highlighted the importance of leadership in challenging situations and speculated on how Suryakumar’s interactions with players like Abhishek and Samson could have influenced the team’s success.

Overall, Ponting’s insights shed light on the significance of backing players during tough times and the impact of strong leadership in guiding a team to success. India’s bold decisions and resilient performances ultimately led them to T20 World Cup glory, showcasing the power of belief and determination in achieving remarkable feats in cricket.
