A tragic hit-and-run incident in Winter Haven, Florida has left a community reeling after an 8-year-old boy was killed and a 10-year-old boy left severely injured. The driver, Victoria Johnson, 30, appeared in court via video conference, displaying a range of emotions from disbelief to tears as she was charged with multiple offenses related to the crash.

The incident occurred outside Faith Baptist Church, where the boys had attended a birthday celebration before attempting to cross the street to get cupcakes and cakes. The 8-year-old tragically succumbed to his injuries, while the 10-year-old was left with a compound skull fracture, a broken femur, and a broken arm.

Johnson initially reported her vehicle stolen, but evidence of damage and biological matter led detectives to believe she was involved in the hit-and-run. She later admitted to driving the vehicle despite her suspended license, revealing that she was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash.

Johnson’s co-defendants, Charles Cory Stewart and Mya Bass, were also implicated in the incident and charged with resisting arrest. Stewart was spotted driving the vehicle, leading to a standoff with deputies at a home in Lake Wales.

The impact of the tragedy reverberated through the community, particularly at Boswell Elementary School, where the deceased child was a student. Described as a beloved member of the school family with a bright spirit and willingness to help others, the loss has left a profound impact on students, teachers, and staff.

As the legal process unfolds and the community mourns the loss of a young life, the repercussions of the hit-and-run serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and substance abuse. The need for accountability, justice, and support for those affected by the tragedy remains paramount as the community comes to terms with the heartbreaking loss.
