Multivitamins and minerals have long been a staple in the daily routines of health-conscious individuals, especially those over the age of 60. A recent study has suggested that these supplements may not only slow cognitive decline but also potentially slow down the aging process in general. However, the findings of this study were based on indirect measures of aging, leaving uncertainty around the actual health benefits of taking multivitamins.

Howard Sesso, a researcher at Harvard University, emphasizes that while there may be some small benefits to taking multivitamins with minimal risk, it is not yet at a point where it can be recommended for all older adults. He notes that there have been no identified negative effects of daily multivitamin consumption so far.

In the past, there have been claims about the benefits of individual vitamins, but research has shown that excessive intake of certain vitamins can actually be harmful. For example, too much vitamin A can weaken bones, excessive vitamin B3 can damage the liver, and an overdose of vitamin B6 can lead to numbness in the extremities. The UK’s health services only recommend vitamin D supplementation for everyone, particularly during the winter months.

Multivitamin and mineral supplements like Centrum Silver, used in the study, typically contain levels close to the recommended daily doses, avoiding the risk of overconsumption. The study involved 1000 participants aged around 70 who were randomly assigned to take the supplement or a placebo, making it a rigorous and controlled trial.

Blood samples from the participants were analyzed for epigenetic markers, which change in a predictable manner as people age. The study found that those taking multivitamins aged slightly less than those on placebo, as indicated by certain epigenetic clocks. However, the effect sizes were modest, equivalent to about four months of aging over a two-year period.

It is important to note that the clinical implications of this slight slowing of epigenetic aging are still unclear, and more research is needed to understand the potential health benefits. The study primarily included participants of European descent, raising questions about whether similar results would be seen in non-European populations or younger individuals.

Overall, while the study suggests a possible link between multivitamin supplementation and slowed aging, further research is needed to confirm these findings and understand their implications for overall health. The study also evaluated the effects of cocoa extracts, which did not show any significant effects on epigenetic aging markers.
