Donald Trump sparked surprise and criticism with a post proposing that Venezuela might become the 51st state of the United States.
Following Venezuela’s 4–2 victory over Italy in the World Baseball Classic semifinal on Monday, the president made this suggestion on his Truth Social platform:
Trump has previously aired similar concepts about incorporating Greenland and Canada into the United States.
In January, a U.S. military operation led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from his residence. He was brought to the United States, where he is currently held in New York on cocaine-trafficking conspiracy charges.
Venezuela is scheduled to compete against the United States in the World Baseball Classic final in Miami on Tuesday.
