The intricate, Afrofuturistic sculptures of Ekow Nimako merge mythology, landscapes, and technology. The Ghanaian-Canadian artist employs thousands of black LEGO bricks to delve into the legends and folklore of the African diaspora, crafting figurative representations of allegorical creatures and spiritual entities. Utilizing a single, modular medium, Nimako illuminates a diverse array of cultural phenomena, from graffiti art in his series Building Black GRAPHICA to expansive cityscapes in Building Black CIVILIZATIONS.
Currently, Nimako is developing a collection that draws inspiration from African ceremonial masks, interstellar travel, machines, and geometric patterns. Some of these pieces are presently showcased in Building Black AMORPHIA: Spiritual Starships at Harbourfront Centre, as part of the ZUUMBA 365 program celebrating Black culture.

Recently, Nimako completed a multi-part piece called “Children of the Rouge Valley” at the Rouge Valley Community Recreation Centre in Scarborough, Ontario. He is also in the process of creating another public installation on a Canadian university campus. The exhibition Building Black AMORPHIA: Spiritual Starships remains on display in Toronto until August 31.
