All attention will be on Rory McIlroy as he takes to the greens at Augusta National Golf Club for The Masters 2026. After winning the 2025 edition, McIlroy is poised to become the fourth golfer to achieve consecutive victories at the Masters.

In a surprising turn of events ahead of The Masters, which starts on April 9th, McIlroy announced during a pre-tournament media call that he will skip playing in any lead-up tournaments before Augusta.

McIlroy stated that he plans to continue practicing at home and make scouting trips to Augusta. This update was shared by NUCLR Golf on X, with a tweet that read:

“🚨🌺🗓️ #NEW — Rory McIlroy has confirmed that his next start will come at The Masters, with the 5-time major Champion opting for practice at home and scouting trips to Augusta National instead of playing an extra event. McIlroy made the comments on a pre tournament media call.

You can check NUCLR Golf’s tweet below:

Only time will reveal if McIlroy’s decision to train at home will achieve the desired results. While he is a strong contender at Augusta National Golf Club, he will also face challenges from players like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy receives a warning about his decision from a 3x PGA Tour winner

Before sharing his schedule update during the pre-tournament call, McIlroy had discussed the same with reporters at TGL. While some fans support his strategy of not playing before The Masters, a 3-time PGA Tour winner has cautioned McIlroy against it.

This warning comes from Johnson Wagner, who, during an appearance on Golf on CBS, emphasized the importance of participating in tournaments before the Masters. Wagner stated:

“He needs to play Houston. When you think about having three weeks off of competitive golf leading into The Masters, there’s no way you can practice at home that can compare to getting competitive starts.”

Wagner further noted:

“You look at Houston, Memorial Park, big golf course, he can go out there and work on any shot shape he wants to off the tee. He can practice the tee ball on nine at Augusta. He can practice all the shots he’s going to need. It doesn’t even matter how he plays, just go and play. Show up on Wednesday, play the pro-am, have some fun and be loose. I think he needs to, if he wants to be a contender at Augusta and defend his title, he needs to play in Houston.”

Although the exact reason for McIlroy’s choice to avoid pre-Masters tournaments is unclear, it might relate to his previous back injury. He withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a back issue but recovered in time for The Players. It is possible that McIlroy is being cautious to prevent further injury.
