On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey wrote a simple message: “just setting up my twittr”.
This was the inaugural post on the platform widely recognized as Twitter, which has been rebranded as X by its new owner, Elon Musk. The acquisition deal is still subject to legal proceedings. Subsequently, X was integrated into Musk’s xAI and later became part of SpaceX.
Musk significantly reduced the company’s workforce and ignited new controversies by integrating xAI’s chatbot Grok. The chatbot controversially referred to itself as “MechaHitler” and was involved in generating extensive sexual deepfakes, including those of real women and children.
Despite maintaining a strong appeal among certain user groups, particularly in the tech industry, X faces competition from platforms such as Bluesky and Meta’s Threads. Reports indicate that Threads has recently surpassed X in terms of daily mobile users. However, all these text-focused services are overshadowed by apps like Instagram and TikTok.
Regarding Dorsey’s original tweet, the Twitter co-founder sold it as an NFT for $2.9 million. However, its value has reportedly dropped significantly, leaving the buyer unable to resell it.
