The anticipation for HBO’s “Harry Potter” has been building for some time, with production kicking off at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in July 2025. Following months of set photos, casting updates, and fan theories, the production team has finally unveiled the first official images and trailer for the upcoming series, meeting all expectations.

The trailer features young Harry Potter, portrayed by Dominic McLaughlin, making his way to the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch on a snowy day, donned in a red and gold Gryffindor cloak, his name and player number visible on the back. Ahead, a throng of students enters the pitch under the fluttering Gryffindor and Hufflepuff house flags.

Fans with keen eyes will notice a Fred and George banner in the corner, a testament to the meticulous attention to detail in recreating this world. Alongside this imagery, the show’s official Instagram released a teaser, offering the clearest insight yet into the series’ vision. The HBO “Harry Potter” era has officially commenced.

A New Hogwarts Built From the Ground Up

Though a single trailer can’t reveal everything, it provides significant insight. This iteration of Hogwarts is being crafted by production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, known for her work on Interview With the Vampire and Pachinko. Her involvement suggests a commitment to creating a school that feels authentic and unique, honoring past films but not constrained by them.

Principal photography started on July 14, 2025, with the working title “Dark Train,” at the same Leavesden location where all eight original Harry Potter films were produced from 2001 to 2011. Filming at this iconic site holds symbolic significance, but the creative team is clear that this is no mere retread.

The series aims to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, delving deeper into the source material than the two-hour films could. Warwick Davis, reprising his role as Professor Flitwick, described it as a more detailed retelling of the stories audiences have come to love. The first image suggests the production team is ready to deliver on this promise.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. This trio was announced in May 2025, followed by the start of production two months later. The supporting cast is impressive.

John Lithgow steps into the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer portrays Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost takes on the beloved character of Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu is cast as Severus Snape. Essiedu’s casting sparked discussion upon announcement, and he has since spoken about receiving racist threats urging him to leave the role. Despite this, he remains committed. Further cast members include Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Lambert Wilson as Nicolas Flamel. Hans Zimmer is composing the score.

Each actor has agreed to a decade-long journey with the series, aiming to cover all seven books. This long-term dedication is uncommon in television but essential for this material.

What Daniel Radcliffe Said and Why It Matters

Daniel Radcliffe, the original Harry Potter, has shown grace throughout this transition. He publicly shared that he reached out to McLaughlin to wish him well and encouraged fans to avoid comparing the new cast with his portrayal alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. Radcliffe also expressed understanding of why a new adaptation is needed. He mentioned on Stephen Colbert’s show that he is genuinely pleased his child will have a version to enjoy that doesn’t feature him, as watching it with him would be distracting. This perspective highlights his self-awareness and generosity, given his decade-long association with the character.

Filming for the first season is set to continue until mid-2026, with the second season’s production slated to begin soon after. The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO in early 2027, featuring eight episodes in its inaugural season.

With over 600 million copies of the books sold worldwide and the eight films earning more than $7 billion globally, the audience for this series already exists. The true test will be whether the production can respect and honor the deep connection fans have with this world. Based on the carefully crafted, detailed image of a snowy Hogwarts day, the prospects seem promising.
