Grey’s Anatomy has hinted at the upcoming departure of Dr. Owen Hunt following news of actors Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver leaving the series.
In the episode aired on Thursday, March 26, Owen (played by McKidd) and Teddy (played by Raver) traveled to Cascade Hill to assist a smaller, under-resourced hospital. During this visit, Teddy discovered that Owen received a job offer from Cascade, which he was contemplating.
Ultimately, Owen assured Teddy that he would remain at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Despite this, viewers are aware that McKidd, 53, will conclude his storyline as Owen by the end of season 22.
“Grey’s Anatomy has been a significant part of my life, both creatively and personally, and I am profoundly thankful for all the opportunities the show has provided over the years,” McKidd stated on Wednesday, March 25. “Portraying Dr. Owen Hunt and directing the show have greatly influenced me, and I have been privileged to work with an exceptional group of people during this time. I am especially grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen and supporting me as I ventured into directing.”
He further expressed: “As this chapter concludes, I am eager to explore new opportunities, tell new stories, and apply the knowledge I have gained in this next phase of my career.”
Raver, 57, also addressed her departure, confirming the news publicly.
“Portraying Dr. Teddy Altman has been a cherished and significant experience for me. Sixteen years ago, I had the remarkable opportunity to step into this role, thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers,” she stated. “Since then, it has been a true joy to bring Shonda’s iconic words to life with our talented team of writers. To the fans — your unwavering dedication and support are why this show remains so impactful. Thank you for making this set my magical place and my home.”
Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the show, hinted at how the season will conclude for Teddy (Raver) and Owen (McKidd).
“Over the years, we have witnessed Owen and Teddy’s love story grow and deepen — two characters who always seem to reconnect. It is both bittersweet and joyous to give this couple the happy ending they deserve,” Rhimes said. “Kevin and Kim bring exceptional talent, depth, and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions have left a lasting impact on Grey’s Anatomy, both on and off-screen. I am incredibly grateful to have worked with them and to have seen them shine.”
She concluded: “While we will miss seeing them in the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial each day, I look forward to seeing where Kim’s and Kevin’s paths will lead them.”
Deadline reported that McKidd and Raver were informed over a month ago about their departure from Grey’s Anatomy. Their final appearance will be in the season 22 finale, which recently completed production and is scheduled to air on May 7.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET, with streaming available the next day on Hulu.
