Everyone experiences difficult times, and recently it seems Jingwei Yin has been facing his own challenges. After the show, backstage, he shared, “This collection stems from a deeply personal experience. Over the past six months, I’ve faced troubles and struggles, experiencing resistance and at times feeling like I was falling apart. This emotion permeated the development of the collection.”
We refrained from probing further into Yin’s personal struggles. On his atmospheric, smoke-filled runway, he transformed adversity into art. His collection, titled Radical Tenderness, captures the heightened sensitivity often brought on by personal upheaval, expressed through garments with profound colors and meticulously crafted textures, drapes, and proportions.
The jagged spikes on his laser-cut cupro cuffs, collars, and armbands moved with intention. Drop-waisted skirts featured scalloped-cut fabric with spiked tips, transitioning to longer, more fluid sections. The knitwear was chunky, richly speckled, and intentionally frayed, enveloping the wearer with a sense of protective abundance.
Opaque overdyed jersey, displaying subtle color variations, formed diagonally-paneled full-length dresses beneath bolder pieces. Cropped and colored evening jackets had lapels designed to loop protectively under the front and rise at the chest. A striking dress in pale olive elegantly draped from the hips and neckline, meeting in a twisted knot at the stomach. Oversized leather moto jackets, silkily sheened corduroy tailored jackets, and action-shouldered 1980s-style leisure jackets seemed made for retreat. Some corseted jackets were left open at the back, with hook-and-eye closures detached to reveal the garment beneath. The designer emphasized his aim to capture the intricate complexity of the women he dresses.
Yin also found a silver lining while creating this Oude Waag collection. “I discovered how to confront challenges and move forward. Life has a flow, and through it, you can see yourself more clearly,” he reflected. Despite the somber inspiration, the collection was indeed captivating to behold.
