FreightWaves recently had a conversation with Daren Hansen, a Sr. Compliance Expert at J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc., discussing the importance of leveraging ELD data to enhance operations. The discussion highlighted the growing disparity between carriers who simply use ELDs to meet regulatory requirements and those who harness ELD data to operate more efficiently and safely.
As enforcement actions intensify, Hansen emphasized the significance of ELD compliance, especially with the CVSA’s updated enforcement policy effective April 1 and the upcoming International Roadcheck in May. The enforcement policy now imposes stricter penalties for tampering with ELD data, underscoring the urgency for carriers to ensure compliance.
FMCSA has already revoked 27 ELDs this year, prompting carriers to carefully select ELD vendors with a strong compliance track record. Hansen cautioned against haphazardly choosing vendors and urged carriers to actively monitor ELD data for any signs of manipulation or non-compliance.
Hansen categorized ELD compliance into two phases – ELDs 1.0 and ELDs 2.0. While ELDs 1.0 focuses on basic compliance and recording, ELDs 2.0 encourages carriers to view ELDs as intelligence engines that provide valuable insights into operational efficiency and safety. By analyzing ELD data proactively, carriers can identify trends, mitigate risks, and make informed decisions to improve their operations.
The key takeaway from the conversation was the importance of treating ELD data as a strategic asset rather than a mere compliance tool. Carriers that leverage ELD data effectively will not only enhance their compliance but also gain a competitive advantage in running efficient and scalable operations.
