“There’s an intrinsic desire to be grounded in naturalism. At the heart of ‘Harry Potter,’ nature is the essence of magic,” explained production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, highlighting the show’s aim to blend magical realism into HBO’s adaptation of the Wizarding World. “Harnessing these elements is what creates magic,” she added.
The upcoming show meticulously bases each animal on extensive research and observation of their natural counterparts.
“The result of significant teamwork,” stated Laura Sindall, as she displayed the prototypes of the show’s owls. These are crafted from metal and plastic to mimic real owl movements. Each feather is individually inserted into a net that is attached to the framework by the feather team.
“Each owl comprises about 36,000 feathers,” noted CFX artist Sophie Rechtberger regarding the iconic Hogwarts messengers and beloved pets. “We made 10 owls for this production.”
The series will also present an upgraded version of Scabbers, Ron’s occasional pet rat, now equipped with internal motors to simulate organic movements.
“When you press the feet down, it compresses, allowing me to move it around,” demonstrated John Nolan, Creature Effects Design Supervisor. “It doesn’t feel overly mechanical, enhancing the experience for a young actor who may have never interacted with an animatronic before.”
Apart from moving naturally on the ground, a “biting Scabbers” version was also crafted, demonstrated by a team member with the rat hanging from her finger.
Additional creatures include a previously unseen toad, whose movements are directly inspired by nature, replicating the details of its eyes, tongue, and nostrils. Flubberworms covered in slime and fire-crabs that emit fire using a remotely operated animatronic system are also featured.
