This evening, I join countless Americans across the nation in celebrating the Michigan Wolverines and the UConn Huskies as they face off in the 2026 NCAA College Basketball National Championship.

For nearly 90 years, this tournament has enthralled our nation with a remarkable showcase of athleticism, determination, and victory. Each March, 68 college teams engage in an intense three-week, single-elimination contest that energizes and unites the country. The tournament features both large and small colleges from every part of the United States, each with its unique traditions and embodying the exceptional spirit of America.

To reach the final match, teams endure a challenging regular season followed by six rounds of play in the celebrated tradition of “March Madness.” This beloved spring competition captivates millions of fans who fill out brackets and eagerly watch the unpredictable tournament unfold, defined by dominant performances, thrilling victories, underdog triumphs, and unexpected outcomes. This year is no different, and when the final buzzer sounds tonight, one team will secure its place in collegiate sports history.

These talented student-athletes have surmounted every challenge to compete for the championship trophy. This accomplishment results from years of dedication, training, discipline, personal effort, teamwork, and camaraderie. It is a shared triumph with supportive families, devoted fans, and committed coaches focused on developing leaders who will excel both on and off the court.

Melania and I extend our congratulations to these outstanding players and coaches for reaching the College Basketball National Championship. May the best team emerge victorious!
