A partygoer at Hyde St, who mocked a group of men’s costumes and provoked them to a fight, allegedly attempted to punch and kick officers during his arrest, according to police reports.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, from Dunedin, stated that the incident took place around 3pm on Albany St, just outside the confines of the Hyde St party held yesterday.

The annual event, organized by the Otago University Students’ Association, sold over 4100 tickets.

According to Snr Sgt Bond, a 20-year-old man, who attended the North Dunedin party, laughed at a group of men’s costumes and then incited a fight with them.

Security personnel had to step in to manage the situation.

Police addressed the man, who allegedly continued to act aggressively and promote violence.

After being warned, he was taken into custody.

While being restrained, the man reportedly behaved in an assaultive manner, trying to punch and kick the officers, as stated by Snr Sgt Bond.

The man has been released on bail and is scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday. He faces charges of assaulting police, resisting arrest, and disorderly behavior that could lead to violence.

Snr Sgt Bond noted that aside from this incident, the Hyde St crowd was generally “well-behaved.”

No arrests were made at the event.
