The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. near the junction of SH36 and Leonard Road.
Inspector Logan Marsh reported that the road has been reopened after a thorough examination of the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the cars veered across the center line, and authorities are currently probing the cause.
Marsh expressed gratitude towards those who immediately offered assistance.
“These situations are always challenging, and we want to recognize the efforts of the public who stepped up to help while emergency services were en route.”
“Accidents like this are heartbreaking for the families and the community, and the police remain committed to supporting those impacted by this tragic event.”
This incident is one of several crashes reported in the Bay of Plenty over the past week.
With increased traffic expected over the weekend, Marsh advised drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
“We urge all road users to prioritize safety and make responsible decisions whenever on the road, not only during the extended weekend but every day, whether traveling short or long distances.”
