A suburban woman has been charged federally for allegedly providing false information during the purchase of a gun that was later used to kill Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew and injure his partner critically at Swedish Hospital over the weekend.

According to a federal complaint filed in Indiana, Olivia Burgos acquired a Glock 29, a 10-millimeter pistol, from Range USA in Merrillville, Indiana, on May 27, 2024. She reportedly stated on the purchase paperwork that she was the legitimate transferee and not using drugs, according to an affidavit from an ATF agent.

The affidavit states that Burgos later admitted to lying about these claims when approached by ATF agents after the shooting incident.

It was revealed in the filing that Burgos was battling a fentanyl addiction at the time of purchase and had consumed the drug on the day she acquired the firearm. She also allegedly received funds from her then-boyfriend, a convicted felon prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms, to buy the gun. Additionally, Burgos provided a La Porte, Indiana, address on the form, although she was residing in Highland, Indiana, with the felon, according to the ATF agent.

Burgos faces charges of making a materially false statement in the acquisition of a firearm.

The complaint does not identify Burgos’ ex-boyfriend, nor does it link her directly to the shooting or clarify how the gun arrived at Swedish Hospital. At the time of the incident, Talley was in Cook County jail awaiting trial for charges including unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated battery of a correctional officer, according to court records.

On Monday, state prosecutors accused Alphanso Talley, a 26-year-old with seven felony convictions, of murdering Bartholomew and injuring his partner while in police custody at the hospital. Talley had been arrested less than three hours prior for an alleged robbery at a Family Dollar in Albany Park.

At the time of the shootings, Talley had evaded electronic monitoring and had pending cases for armed carjacking and armed robbery. The Illinois Department of Corrections also listed him as a parole absconder.
