The term “incompetent” has frequently been used to characterize Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s management of the Pentagon. During a House hearing, Hegseth’s performance failed to inspire confidence as he seemed to echo cult-like rhetoric rather than provide concrete answers regarding the conflict in Iran.

During the hearing, an exchange between Hegseth and Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) highlighted these concerns. Hegseth described Iran as being determined to acquire a nuclear weapon, emphasizing the need to bring them to the negotiation table to abandon this pursuit. He stated, “hell-bent on getting a nuclear weapon and getting them to a point where they’re at the table giving it up, in a way that they haven’t, should never have it.”
Smith questioned, âSo they haven’t broken yet?â
Hegseth responded, âWe haven’t gotten there yet, well, their nuclear facilities have been obliterated. Underground, they’re buried and weâre watching. 24 7. So we know where any nuclear material.â
Smith interrupted, pointing out the inconsistency, âQuick second here. We had to start this war you just said 60 days ago. Because the nuclear weapon was an imminent threat. Now you’re saying that it was completely obliterated.â
Hegseth continued with prepared remarks, âThey had not given up their nuclear ambitions and they had a conventional shield of thousands of.â
Smith then commented, âSo Operation Midnight Hammer accomplished nothing of substance. It left us in exactly the same place we were before.â
Hegseth asserted that Iran is adopting a strategy similar to North Korea, adding, âPresident Trump saw Iran at its weakest moment. Took an action to ensure in a way that only the United States of America could do with our Israeli partners.â
Smith reminded Hegseth that Iran still possesses nuclear material.
