A Chicago man was taken into custody on Tuesday, facing charges related to a police chase in October 2024 that resulted in the death of his 18-year-old passenger. The reason behind the 18-month delay in filing charges by prosecutors remains unclear.

Christian Rios, 24, is facing charges of reckless homicide by motor vehicle and aggravated possession of a weapon, following the incident on October 1, 2024.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers from the Priority Response Team were patrolling the 5500 block of South Pulaski, targeting a series of robberies in the area. They spotted two individuals they suspected were armed entering a black Lexus sedan at approximately 1:58 a.m. As officers approached, the sedan fled, initiating a pursuit.

The chase concluded on the 3500 block of South Ashland when the sedan drove into an intersection, collided with an SUV, and crashed into a building.

The passenger in the sedan was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, suffering a leg injury, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. Police reported the recovery of two weapons at the crash site.

The SUV’s driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident.

The police have yet to provide an explanation for the delay in filing charges following the crash.
