President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind a Republican congressmember to succeed Sen. Mitch McConnell, while steering clear of a self-proclaimed MAGA contender backed by Elon Musk.
On Friday, Trump declared his endorsement for Rep. Andy Barr in the Kentucky Republican primary, coinciding with his request for businessman Nate Morris to exit the race and accept an unspecified position within the Trump administration.
This endorsement significantly enhances Barr’s chances of clinching the GOP nomination over former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron in the predominantly Republican state.
“I know Andy well, and he is always a Vote we can count on because he knows what it takes to GET THINGS DONE and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump stated on social media.
Trump mentioned he requested Morris to serve as an ambassador, without revealing the specific diplomatic position, while commending him as a “strong MAGA Warrior.”
“Nate is Oxford educated, tough as nails, LOVES our Great Nation, and will represent the United States very well, overseas, or otherwise,” Trump remarked.
Morris extended his support to Barr in a social media post, urging “all Kentuckians to rally behind our next Senator.”
Although Morris self-funded his campaign to remain financially competitive with Barr, he benefited from a substantial $10 million contribution from Elon Musk, as indicated by federal campaign finance records earlier this year.
The primary has been characterized by Barr, Cameron, and Morris attempting to distance themselves from McConnell, a prominent figure in the Kentucky GOP who has become an antagonist of Trump and criticized him for the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
This distancing from McConnell highlights the influence of Trump’s endorsement in Kentucky, as noted by Kentucky Republican strategist Tres Watson. He observed that Cameron is already acquainted with the advantage Trump’s endorsement provides, as he won the GOP primary for governor in 2023 with Trump’s backing.
“It’s all over but the shouting,” Watson remarked. “Donald Trump’s endorsement effectively ends this campaign and Andy Barr can begin to turn his attention to the general election.”
Trump’s endorsement was met with enthusiasm by Barr’s supporters. Former Kentucky Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayer commented that it indicates Barr has executed a “perfect race” so far.
“I’m pleased that President Trump has endorsed Andy Barr,” Thayer stated. “He likes to support winners and it’s been clear right from the start that Andy has what it takes to win the primary and the general and hold the seat for Republicans.”
