Today marks the 84th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, a significant event where American and Australian forces united to shift the momentum of World War II in the Pacific. Their collective bravery and sacrifice forged a lasting alliance between the two nations, which has endured through history as a pivotal element of security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
For four intense days, American and Australian troops battled together in the Coral Sea, relentlessly launching air strikes against the enemy invasion fleet. This marked the first carrier-to-carrier naval battle in military history, where opposing fleets never directly engaged but instead executed their missions from the air. After days of fierce combat, the Allied forces executed a precise strike, stopping a significant enemy advance in the Pacific Theatre and delivering a crucial blow to its naval power. This victory paved the way for the decisive triumph at Midway just a month later.
From the success of this hard-fought battle emerged a strong alliance between the United States and Australia, which continues to flourish. The current Administration is committed to strengthening this strategic partnership. Last October, a landmark agreement was reached with Australia to broaden access to rare earth and critical minerals, vital for deterring threats, facing adversaries, and ensuring economic prosperity for future generations.
As we solemnly commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, we pay tribute to the steadfast determination of our service members and honor the heroes who sacrificed their lives for freedom. Together with our Australian allies, we remain dedicated to promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, ushering in a new era of security and prosperity for our nation and allies worldwide.
