House and Senate Republicans are working to dismantle Donald Trump’s $1.8 billion Department of Justice fund, which they label as a slush fund for political criminals and insurrectionists.

CNN’s Manu Raju shared on X:

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is encountering significant opposition regarding the $1.8 billion during a tense Senate GOP meeting, I’m told. Republicans also caution that a crucial immigration enforcement/reconciliation bill they aim to pass could be jeopardized due to this issue.

…

When asked about the possibility of eliminating the $1.8 billion fund, John Thune replied, “I don’t have anything for you.” He also avoided commenting on whether the reconciliation bill would pass the Senate this week as he entered his office.

Most senators have expressed their opposition to the fund, with few defending it. A significant number of Republicans are unhappy about the $1.8 billion fund.

Momentum is building among House and Senate Republicans to abolish the slush fund through legislative action.

Thune’s evasive response to Raju suggested that the reconciliation bill, which would allocate funds for ICE and border patrol, faces significant challenges.

The extent of the issues caused by Trump’s alleged corruption was highlighted when Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News wrote on X:

THE SENATE will adjourn until June, leaving the reconciliation bill incomplete. THUNE just informed senators in the room. This is all due to the DOJ weaponization fund. The House is expected to follow suit shortly.

Trump’s strategy appears to be unraveling, and the reconciliation bill is now under threat.
