For over 250 years, the dedicated members of the United States Merchant Marine have been instrumental in driving our economy, securing commerce, and safeguarding American interests both domestically and internationally. Today, we recognize the courageous Mariners who have carried our Nation’s strength across the seas, reaffirming our commitment to revitalize and enhance America’s maritime supremacy.
Since the founding days of our Republic, the Merchant Marine has been vital in defending and promoting American interests. During the Revolutionary War, Merchant Mariners bravely defied enemy blockades, seized British ships, and delivered essential supplies that fueled the Continental Army’s fight for liberty. Their unwavering bravery and selfless sacrifices were pivotal in securing our young Republic’s independence and they have consistently stood firm for our Nation over the centuries. In World War II, the Merchant Marine played a crucial role in transporting troops, fuel, and essential war materials across dangerous waters. Despite facing relentless enemy attacks and sustaining heavy casualties, these patriots persevered and helped secure victory in our struggle against tyranny. Whenever our Nation has been called to action, in times of war or peace, the United States Merchant Marine has answered with unmatched determination, carrying America’s strength and prosperity across every ocean.
Today, the mission of the Merchant Marine remains more crucial than ever. They transport goods that stock our shelves, fuel our industries, and supply our Armed Forces globally. Their efforts bolster our economy and support national security, which is why my Administration is actively working to restore America’s maritime strength. Last year, I signed an Executive Order to expand shipbuilding capacity, strengthen the maritime workforce, protect the industrial base, and ensure America’s shipping capabilities can support both military operations and economic independence. These decisive actions are leading to unprecedented investments in port and maritime infrastructure, boosting American industry, driving economic growth, and enhancing national security.
Today, we honor the men and women of the United States Merchant Marine, whose consistent service has sustained our Nation through its most challenging trials and elevated our prosperity. As we celebrate 250 years of American Independence, we renew our commitment to bolstering our maritime power and ensuring that America remains the dominant force on the oceans for generations to come.
