Barbers bring cutting edge to Jack’s Point

The proprietors of the first barbershop located south of the Kawarau River are responding to a strong local demand for their services.

Since the Point Cut Barbershop opened its doors in Jack’s Point last Tuesday, co-owner and head barber Remmy Kumar has experienced a surge in business, including a fully booked Saturday.

Kumar, who previously managed his own barbershop in Yorkshire for eight years, along with his co-owners—his wife Nina, Leo Smith, and Gemma Taylor—express their gratitude for the opportunity to establish the first barbershop in this rapidly developing southern area.

The timing and location of their venture are seen as ideal, providing convenience to the nine-to-five workforce in Jack’s Point and Hanley’s Farm.

“That’s why we’ve decided to offer late-night hours, and for those who can’t make it then, we open early on Saturdays,” Kumar explains.

He highlights the ease for customers who can walk to the shop rather than contend with traffic.

The shop offers a premium range of services, catering to children, those over 65, and everyone in between.

After selling his barbershop in England in 2024 to travel with Nina, Kumar says they arrived in Queenstown early last year and fell in love with the area. They are now pursuing residency in New Zealand.

While Kumar maintains the shop’s operations, Smith and Taylor manage administrative tasks and handle social media, he adds.

Located at Unit 11/175 Maori Jack Rd, the shop operates from Tuesday to Friday between 11am and 7pm or 8pm, and is open all day on Saturday.
