Grace, the elder sibling, was raised in New York City alongside her sisters. She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. Her acting career gained momentum after being directed by her father, Timothy Van Patten, in an episode of The Sopranos. Grace’s career further flourished with roles in Boardwalk Empire, Maniac, and Nine Perfect Strangers.
Grace’s fame surged when she was cast as Lucy in Hulu’s Tell Me Lies. She later secured the lead role as Amanda Knox in a limited series that explores Knox’s life post-wrongful accusation in Meredith Kercher‘s murder trial, her imprisonment, and eventual freedom. Originally, Margaret Qualley was slated for the role, but she left the project, leading to Grace’s casting.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox enabled Grace to work alongside Anna, who portrayed Knox’s actual sister.
In March 2025, Knox told Us Weekly, “I’ll say that Grace is f***ing amazing. That’s what I will say. I’m in a very, very privileged position as someone who is a subject of a story. Typically someone in my position — the subject — doesn’t get to be an executive producer of their own show.”
