The Sport Integrity Commission of New Zealand has issued a reminder to all athletes regarding the use of recreational drugs following cricketer Doug Bracewell’s one-month ban for testing positive for cocaine earlier this year.

Bracewell, a former Black Cap, was found to have used cocaine out of competition and for reasons unrelated to enhancing his sports performance after a T20 match for Central Districts in January.

The Commission’s Chief Executive, Rebecca Rolls, emphasized the importance of athletes acting responsibly and being aware of the influence they have on others, especially young participants who may look up to them.

Rolls expressed concerns about the health and safety risks associated with recreational drug use, highlighting the dangers of substances like cocaine and the need for athletes to make informed and responsible decisions.

The Commission is dedicated to supporting athletes struggling with substance misuse, offering counseling services to those who test positive for doping to help them prioritize their well-being and make better choices in the future.

Educational efforts will continue to raise awareness about the risks of substance misuse in sports and promote a culture of clean, safe, and fair competition.
