Over the years, various biographies, memoirs, and insights from royal experts have gradually unveiled details about her personal tastes, friendships, and family dynamics.
One notable revelation is the deep connection she maintained with Sophie, 61, the Duchess of Edinburgh and the spouse of Prince Edward, 62, who is the youngest son of the late monarch.
Though the queen was known for being discreet about her opinions in public, those who closely observed the family noted that Sophie’s position in her inner circle was distinct.
According to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, “Apart from her daughter Anne, the queen was closer to Sophie than to any other royal women.
“Their relationship was genuinely close, with Elizabeth always being Sophie’s primary confidante.”
Seward also mentioned, “The queen appreciated her grounded nature, as Sophie opted not to have costly security measures and other extravagances, and admired her simplicity. In many ways, she regarded Sophie as a surrogate daughter.”
