For his latest collection, Bibhu Mohapatra drew inspiration from the concept of a dot to honor the women in his family. In Sanskrit, the term “bindu” signifies the beginning of all things, he explained. Mohapatra reminisced about watching his mother perform the Hindu tradition of placing a red vermillion dot on her forehead each morning, a gesture she described as more than just indicating marital status.
“She told me that the dot is where the most power is concentrated,” he said. “It could represent the core of your entire system. Before energy spreads, it originates from a dot.”
In this collection, Mohapatra’s signature style—featuring classic columns, voluminous A-line designs, and corseted silhouettes—embodied this concept both literally and figuratively. Dresses showcased bright red hues, point d’esprit, and sparkly embellishments centered at key points, which Mohapatra referred to as “the eye of the comment, or the eye of the storm.” Additionally, horizontal embellishments that faded down a gown’s crinoline skirt suggested the wearer as the central force around which everything revolves. Mohapatra also explored asymmetry through strategic cuts, embroidery placement, and puffed hip drapes.
The theme of the dot extends beyond Mohapatra’s collection to his life and business. Since Covid, his brand has concentrated its efforts on its Tribeca store and core clientele while creatively embracing Mohapatra’s heritage. “Amid the collective grief and uncertainty, I chose to speak about my heritage and lineage. It’s vital that I share my stories and those of my people,” he stated.
