Entering Batsheva Hay’s boutique, located at the juncture of the Lower East Side and NoLIta, offers a glimpse into her creative world. The shop’s distinctive patterned floors and lime-green draped walls reflect the warmth and eclectic nature that characterize both Hay and her fashion creations. This inviting atmosphere is a key factor in maintaining her strong connection with clients. “What I’m making is a rolling manifestation of what people want,” Hay explained. Approximately half of the resort collection this season follows a see-now, buy-now model, with plans to continuously introduce new pieces based on successful silhouettes. These designs cater to a diverse clientele, from Brooklyn performance artists to women from her synagogue. “Am I personally wearing a see-through dress with just a bra and panties?” Hay pondered, referring to a mint-green lace babydoll dress displayed alongside her favored puffy-sleeved lace crop top. “No, but I also know my customer base has widened, and I think that’s amazing.”
Hay’s hybrid approach allows her to experiment with vintage and deadstock materials, exemplified by a cocoon-shaped floral dress adorned with black velvet trim and a matching upholstered belt. This season introduces a variety of taffeta dresses, a fabric Hay believes is primed for a return after being unfairly criticized in the ’80s. “It’s durable, it keeps its shape, and it’s fancy,” she remarked. A particularly striking piece is a bright pink dress featuring a detachable apron with pearl buttons at the waist. Overall, the collection remains a dynamic work in progress. “It’s kind of an active organism,” she stated. “It’s nice to be able to operate on both.”
