ARLINGTON, Texas — In their last World Cup appearance, Jordan faced Argentina, offering their supporters a final opportunity to display their national pride on the global stage. Throughout the tournament, many fans also used this platform to express solidarity with Palestine.
A significant number of Jordanians have Palestinian heritage, and this was evident in the crowd. Many attendees wore the black-and-white checked keffiyehs, a symbol of Palestinian identity.
Issah Essoh, a 32-year-old software consultant from Jordan residing in Houston, expressed his thoughts as spectators settled into their seats. “Our Palestinian brothers and sisters are never far from our thoughts,” Essoh remarked.
Among the attendees was Mohammed Abu Arayes, 37, who traveled from Riyadh with his family to watch the game. With both Jordanian and Palestinian roots, he wore Jordanian colors, while his wife wore a t-shirt with “Palestine” emblazoned on it.
Abu Arayes appreciated the hospitality, even amid the dominant presence of Argentina supporters clad in blue-and-white jerseys. “The Argentine people have been very welcoming,” he noted.
