Esteemed writer Stephen Poliakoff, known for his BAFTA and Emmy accolades, is poised to make a significant return to television with “The Order,” an international political thriller. The series is set in the era surrounding the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.
Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech revealed the eight-part series during the Golden Bee Awards at the Mediterrane Film Festival.
Adapted from Peter Portelli’s acclaimed novel, “The Order” unfolds against the backdrop of a pivotal historical conflict.
“‘The Order’ is an extraordinary mix of politics, faith, ambition, and survival, capturing a time when the fate of nations was uncertain,” Poliakoff explained. “It narrates the journey of individuals maneuvering through immense challenges and tough decisions during one of history’s most dramatic periods.”
The series is a collaboration between Little Island Productions, Hopefield, and the Malta Film Commission. Filming will primarily occur in Malta, and production is expected to begin in 2027.
“The Order” marks Poliakoff’s return to grand-scale television, blending his expertise in international storytelling with character-focused narratives. The executive producers include Helen Flint from Little Island Productions, Neil Chordia from Hopefield, as well as Nick Portelli and Peter Portelli.
