Yellowstone stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have opened up about the unexpected change in showrunners for their Dutton Ranch spinoff.

Hauser, 51, addressed the change in a joint interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting.” He added, “We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.”

Similarly, Reilly, 48, shared her perspective, stating, “We finished [season one] with Chad beautifully. We finished this season together. It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make. And so was Yellowstone.” She emphasized focusing on the positive, concluding, “So is anything worth making. We’re all creative minds and we all work together and I’m so proud of that.”

Prior to the show’s June premiere, Chad Feehan was at the helm of the Yellowstone spinoff.

According to Us Weekly, Feehan will not be returning as showrunner. This follows reports of friction with series stars Hauser and Reilly, among others, which led to his departure. The creator Taylor Sheridan and his producing partner David Glasser, along with the lead actors, reportedly had more issues with Feehan’s management of the production than with the scripts.

Executive producer Christina Voros commented on Feehan’s exit, telling ScreenRant in May that he did “an exceptional job building a world of adversaries for Rip and Beth” in the spinoff. Regarding the specifics of his departure, she said she had little to add, noting that Dutton Ranch had not yet been released to the public at that time, and a future without Feehan was “beyond” her knowledge. She expressed her gratitude to Feehan and his team for their work in creating the show’s world.

Paramount+ has renewed Dutton Ranch for a second season, although a new showrunner has yet to be announced. Dutton Ranch is not the only show by Sheridan to experience changes in showrunners; Lioness, Tulsa King, and Frisco King have also undergone similar shifts. Not all of these shows have had consistent showrunners from season to season. Dutton Ranch is available to stream on Paramount+ every Friday.
