President Donald Trump is organizing a gathering of Republicans in Texas as the party aims to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
The convention is scheduled for September 9-10 in Dallas, as announced by the president on Tuesday through social media.
âIt has never been done before, and will be a truly Historic Event,â Trump stated in a Truth Social post.
He indicated that he anticipates Republicans will celebrate what he calls the âGreat American comeback,â highlighting tax cuts, enhanced border security, and âlower costs,â despite inflation reaching its highest level in over three years.
âAt the Event, we will have hardworking Americans, our Great Innovators, Entrepreneurs, Manufacturers, First Responders, and Job Creators who are powering our Nation’s Golden Age, and proving that America’s best days are still ahead of us,â he stated.
In January, the Republican National Committee approved a rule change during its winter meeting, allowing the party to hold a convention during a midterm election year. This is a novel move since such events are generally conducted during presidential election years.
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters referred to the Dallas convention as a “Trumpapalooza,” intended to highlight the administration’s achievements. “President Trump will unite Republicans around our shared vision, build momentum, and deliver an incredible convention for our Party,” he commented.
In contrast, the Democratic National Committee abandoned its plans for a midterm convention in March.
Trumpâs announcement comes amid concerns among Republicans about the potential loss of Congressional control, driven by the presidentâs low poll numbers, dissatisfaction over the Iran war, and significant worries about the cost of living.
Trump had previously promised a midterm convention but had not confirmed the details, keeping campaigns, donors, and operatives uncertain for months.
The chosen location appears strategically selected to energize Republicans in Texas, where Attorney General Ken Paxton faces a formidable challenge from Democrat James Talarico in the U.S. Senate race.
