In 2003, a mutual friend introduced Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington at a dinner in Austin, Texas, sparking a relationship that soon led to their wedding in Montana on July 4, 2004.
The couple celebrated the birth of their twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, via gestational carrier on November 8, 2007. Shortly after their birth, the twins faced severe health challenges when they were hospitalized for staph infections at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. During their stay, the twins were mistakenly given 1,000 times the recommended dose of heparin, a blood thinner, resulting in them being placed “in incubators with cords attached to them.”
After surviving the critical overdose, the twins made a full recovery, an incident that motivated Quaid to establish The Quaid Foundation.
In March 2012, Buffington, a Texas real estate agent, filed for divorce from the actor known for his role in The Parent Trap but later withdrew her filing.
She pursued legal separation again in October 2012, prompting Quaid to initiate divorce proceedings. Despite this, the couple reconciled, and the filings were dismissed.
Following a third separation, the couple announced their divorce in June 2016, which was finalized in 2018.
