New information has emerged regarding three individuals accused of carrying firearms during the post-Pride Parade celebrations in Boystown from Sunday night into Monday morning. Notably, one of the men was reportedly in possession of two firearms. According to Chicago Police Department (CPD) reports, all three individuals are from suburban areas.
The Chicago police reported that a total of 34 individuals, including five juveniles, were arrested during the event. Most arrests occurred at the unsanctioned post-parade street party, a recurring event in the neighborhood for about ten years. Of those arrested, only six face felony charges, with gun-related cases being the most serious.
Jayron Cleveland, age 22, from Gary, Indiana, was apprehended near the Addison Red Line station at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Sunday, as per a CPD report. Officers stopped Cleveland for allegedly consuming alcohol from a blue cup and observed a “hard bulge” in his waistband. Upon questioning, Cleveland admitted to carrying a firearm, and the officers retrieved a loaded .40-caliber pistol with an extended magazine and a laser attachment from his waistband.
Further inspection of Cleveland’s backpack reportedly uncovered a second fully loaded pistol with a laser attachment, bottles of tequila and Hennessy, about 3 ounces of marijuana, and 27 suspected ecstasy pills. Cleveland faces charges of two counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and one count of possessing ecstasy. Prosecutors requested his detention, but Judge Rivanda Doss Beal denied the motion, according to court records.
Jaydyn Green, 25, from Crete, was arrested shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday across from the Town Hall (19th) District police station in the 800 block of West Addison Street. CPD records indicate officers were dispersing a large crowd when they noticed Green with a backpack containing a “weighted L-shaped object” resembling a firearm.
Officers observed Green sitting down and pressing his back against a residence door, a move they interpreted as an attempt to hide the object. Upon attempting to move him, an officer felt a loaded handgun inside the backpack. Although Green claimed to have a concealed carry license, police found he did not possess a concealed carry license or a Firearm Owner’s Identification card.
Prosecutors did not pursue Green’s detention, and Judge James Murphy III released him to await trial, ordering him to surrender any firearms to police within 48 hours.
Derrick Woods, 33, from Richton Park, was arrested around 2:15 a.m. on Monday in the 3200 block of North Broadway. Officers responded to disperse a “large, unruly crowd” consuming alcohol and fighting with police. An officer saw Woods walking with a backpack that appeared “heavily weighted” like a firearm.
Woods fled when officers attempted to stop him but was quickly apprehended. A loaded .40-caliber pistol was recovered from his backpack. Prosecutors asked for Woods’ detention on a charge of being a felon in possession of a weapon, but Judge Doss Beal released him pending trial. Additionally, Woods’ girlfriend, Shaneka Campbell, 29, faces charges of aggravated battery for allegedly striking an officer while attempting to arrest Woods.
The police’s response to the “large, unruly crowd” came nearly four hours after it formed, blocking streets and using at least one CTA bus as a stage, raising questions about how the situation went unnoticed for so long on one of Lakeview East’s busiest streets.
