On the latest episode of the “Daily Variety” podcast, Variety’s Marlow Stern delves into LeBron James’ choice to depart from the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons and securing one championship. This move leaves one of the NBA’s most renowned teams lacking in star presence.

LeBron James is widely recognized as one of the greatest basketball players. However, his departure puts the Lakers at a pivotal moment, necessitating a rebuild. For a team in Los Angeles, it’s crucial to either attract high-profile players or develop the next Shaq or Kobe.

In recent years, James’ excellence on the court has been somewhat eclipsed by his strong involvement in guiding his son, Bronny James, toward the Lakers. Stern, Variety’s chief correspondent and an avid NBA enthusiast, notes that this situation has caused some frustration among fans. LeBron’s decision to leave followed the Lakers’ signing of a two-year contract with Bronny. According to Stern, LeBron is also contemplating his legacy.

“With his son’s prospects secured, LeBron likely felt it was the right moment to move on. He probably assessed the team’s potential and concluded that a championship next year was unlikely,” Stern remarks. “LeBron’s main goal is to secure a fifth NBA title. He wants to surpass Steph Curry in the number of titles and be recognized as the player of his era with the most championships. He aims to get closer to Michael Jordan, who has six titles. The ongoing debate is about who is the NBA’s GOAT, often narrowed down to Michael Jordan and LeBron. LeBron is acutely aware of these discussions and has been questioned about them extensively. Winning a fifth title is really significant for him.”
