Portugal secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Croatia in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonçalo Ramos. The match began with a subdued first half, where only the UEFA Nations League winners posed any threat, but the second half turned into an exhilarating World Cup classic.

In the first half, Portugal dominated by creating four significant chances, including a missed header by Cristiano Ronaldo, but the score remained level at halftime. Croatia struggled to make any meaningful impact with their possession and found themselves on the defensive.

Thanks for the submission!

The dynamics shifted dramatically in the second half as Ivan Perisic unexpectedly put Croatia ahead. A precise cross from Josip Stanišić found Perisic at the back post, and despite an initial miscontrol, he managed to score in the 53rd minute.

Rafael Leao almost equalized in the 58th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar, having beaten goalkeeper Livakovic. Shortly after, Ronaldo had the ball in the net, courtesy of a brilliant pass from Neto, but it was ruled offside as Ronaldo’s shoulder was marginally ahead of the play.

Nikola Vlašić gave Portugal a lifeline by fouling Renato Veiga in the box during a corner, leading to a penalty after a quick referee review.

Cristiano Ronaldo Scores in the Knockout Stage

Cristiano Ronaldo confidently converted the penalty, securing his first FIFA World Cup knockout stage goal by sending the ball straight while Livakovic dived left.

Mateo Kovacic, who had a quiet game, nearly scored twice in quick succession, with his first shot hitting the post and his subsequent volley being punched over the bar by Costa. The pressure from Croatia continued, with Matanovic forcing another save from Costa.

Petar Sucic found the net in the 80th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Martinez made a bold move by substituting Ronaldo for Ruben Neves, having already replaced Pedo Neto and Bruno Fernandes.

Mario Pasalic, who entered after Ronaldo’s goal, almost clinched a winner in the final moments, but his header was narrowly wide. The match seemed destined for extra time, but with 10 minutes added, more drama awaited.

Stoppage Time Drama Seals Portugal’s Win

In the 94th minute, Gonçalo Ramos, one of Martinez’s four substitutions, headed in the winning goal from a cross by Leao. Despite Croatia’s relentless attempts to equalize, Portugal’s defense held firm.

Croatia believed they had equalized through a Ruben Neves own goal in the 102nd minute, but VAR intervened. The goal was ruled out as the ball had deflected off an offside Croatian player before reaching Neves.

In the closing moments, Croatia launched more attacks, but Portugal, guided by Ronaldo from the sidelines, maintained their lead until the final whistle. Luka Modric was visibly emotional as Croatia exited the tournament. Portugal will face Spain in the Round of 16 on July 6 at the Dallas Stadium.
