Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the American liberation of Guam, a pivotal moment when the United States ended a harsh occupation and restored freedom to an island that had suffered over two years under Imperial Japan. This significant victory is celebrated as one of the defining triumphs of World War II, highlighting the courage and unyielding spirit of the United States Armed Forces.
Guam, a strategically important territory for the United States, faced intense bombardment shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was captured by Imperial Japanese forces two days later. During this occupation, the people of Guam endured severe hardships, including forced labor, starvation, imprisonment, and persecution. Despite these challenges, their hope for liberation never waned. The turning point came on July 21, 1944, when after relentless aerial and naval bombardment from a powerful fleet, nearly 55,000 Marines, Sailors, and soldiers landed on the island to reclaim it and raise the American flag once more.
The joint forces faced intense resistance and brutal counterattacks from well-fortified positions in Guam’s rugged, mountainous terrain and dense jungles. However, the Japanese garrison was ultimately defeated by the bravery and resilience of American troops. By August 10, just 21 days after the initial assault, organized resistance was quelled, and American sovereignty over the island was reestablished. This victory came at a high price, with over 1,200 Americans killed or succumbing to their injuries, and more than 1,000 native Guamanians also losing their lives.
Today, we honor the enduring resilience, unity, and rich heritage of the people of Guam, while paying tribute to the bravery and ultimate sacrifice of the Greatest Generation, who secured Guam’s freedom. This beautiful island was the site of one of World War II’s most significant victories and remains crucial for projecting American power across the Pacific and defending our allies and nation. Under my leadership, the freedom achieved on this hallowed ground will always be protected, the sacrifices of those who secured it will be forever honored, and the United States will remain steadfast and unyielding as the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known.
