Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) has been a standout performer among the “Magnificent Seven” stocks this year, largely due to its strong efforts in monetizing AI initiatives. However, as the tech giant recently released its second-quarter earnings, a shift in momentum may be on the horizon.

Alphabet shares closed below the key 100-day moving average for the first time since April, leading to a nearly 5% decline in premarket trading. Investors were particularly concerned about Alphabet’s capital expenditure (capex) spending trends, with second-quarter capex coming in slightly above Wall Street expectations at $44.9 billion. The company also raised its full-year capex guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion, signaling a significant increase for 2027.

The downward movement in Alphabet’s stock price could potentially test the 200-day moving average at around $323. Despite these challenges, Google Cloud emerged as a bright spot in the company’s second-quarter performance. Revenue from Google Cloud surged 82% to $24.8 billion, with the cloud backlog reaching $514 billion, highlighting strong demand for AI infrastructure.

CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the company’s momentum in AI products, including AI-powered Search, YouTube, and Gemini. Analysts believe that Alphabet is well-positioned to capitalize on its AI investments, leveraging its proprietary TPU/Axion stack and dominant distribution position to capture market share.

However, concerns around AI spending overshadowed the company’s strong quarter, leading to increased scrutiny from investors. As hyperscalers’ capex spending plans come under the spotlight, Alphabet’s stock may face further downward pressure, potentially testing the 200-day moving average.

In conclusion, while Alphabet continues to demonstrate strength in AI monetization, the company’s capex spending and market scrutiny could impact its stock performance in the near term. Investors will be closely watching how Alphabet navigates these challenges to maintain its position as a leader in the tech industry.
