Nick Aldis’s return to wrestling for SummerSlam was unexpected for many fans. Yet, WWE has quickly turned his rivalry with Gunther into one of the event’s most personal and intense storylines.

The tension between them escalated over several weeks, culminating in Aldis preventing The Ring General from joining the Undisputed WWE Championship match at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLV. This led to a heated clash that prompted Triple H to officially schedule their SummerSlam showdown.

Gunther, on paper, is the clear favorite. Over the past year, he has solidified his reputation as The Career Killer by retiring legends like Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles.

Nonetheless, Nick Aldis is no ordinary authority figure. Before taking on the role of SmackDown General Manager, he had a successful career as one of wrestling’s most decorated champions. If WWE wants to surprise its audience, Aldis has a few realistic strategies to defeat Gunther.

Here, we explore three strategies Nick Aldis might employ to overcome Gunther at SummerSlam 2026.

Nick Aldis outwrestles Gunther instead of trying to overpower him

Matching Gunther’s physical prowess is a losing battle. Known for his devastating chops, relentless mat wrestling, and impressive stamina, few have succeeded by confronting him directly.

Instead, Aldis should leverage the technical approach that earned him respect before joining WWE. By slowing down the match, targeting specific body parts, and frustrating Gunther into errors, Aldis can neutralize his power. If Aldis can force the match onto the mat, it levels the playing field considerably.

Gunther has occasionally struggled against opponents who avoid his preferred style. Aldis doesn’t need to dominate; he just needs to disrupt Gunther’s control over the match’s tempo.

This approach would also emphasize that Aldis is not just a general manager stepping into the ring—he’s a seasoned veteran with the instincts of a top champion.

Use Gunther’s emotions against him

One of Gunther’s greatest strengths is also his biggest vulnerability: his emotions. Since failing to reclaim the Undisputed WWE Championship, his frustration has led to increased aggression. This was evident after Aldis cost him and Sami Zayn a win at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLV, leading to their SummerSlam match.

Aldis could exploit this emotional instability. By forcing Gunther to chase the action, Aldis could provoke mistakes and cause Gunther to abandon his disciplined style.

If Gunther focuses more on hurting Aldis than winning, Aldis could capitalize with a counter or perfectly timed finishing move.

This strategy requires Aldis to be not stronger, but smarter than Gunther. Given the personal nature of their rivalry, exploiting Gunther’s anger may be Aldis’s best chance for a major upset in 2026.

Survive long enough for Gunther to beat himself

The simplest route to victory might be endurance. Gunther is known for breaking opponents physically and mentally, but this relentless style can leave openings late in matches if the opponent refuses to give up.

WWE could craft a compelling narrative by showing Aldis enduring everything Gunther throws at him without quitting.

Picture Gunther becoming desperate as multiple powerbombs, sleeper holds, and crushing chops fail to defeat Aldis. This frustration could lead to reckless decisions, providing Aldis with a critical opening.

This approach wouldn’t undermine Gunther’s dominance but would highlight Aldis’s experience and resolve while protecting Gunther’s reputation. WWE has often used this storyline for surprising upsets, allowing the dominant wrestler to control the match until a single mistake changes everything.

If WWE opts for an Aldis victory, this is likely the most believable path. It wouldn’t make Gunther appear weak, but instead, portray the result as a consequence of his fixation on punishing Aldis rather than swiftly winning the match.

This would maintain The Ring General’s aura while granting Aldis the statement victory he’s been seeking since his return to the ring.
