On Friday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer officially threw her support behind Representative Haley Stevens in the fiercely contested Democratic Senate primary for her state. This endorsement marks a significant moment in one of the party’s most notable ideological disputes.
In a video shared on Stevens’ social media account, Whitmer expressed her reasoning: “As governor, I have one strategy: Get things done. And that strategy informs everything that I do, and that’s why I’m endorsing Haley Stevens for the U.S. Senate.”
The primary, scheduled for August 4, sees Stevens competing against Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, to succeed the retiring Senator Gary Peters.
While El-Sayed has garnered support from progressive circles, Stevens enjoys the backing of more traditional Democrats as well as the quiet endorsement of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
