The Alexandria Center for Life Science, a prestigious research center in Manhattan, has long been concerned about the safety threats posed by the nearby Bellevue Men’s Shelter. The recent stabbing spree allegedly carried out by shelter resident Ramon Rivera has brought these concerns to the forefront.

In a letter obtained exclusively by The Post, leaders of the Alexandria Center called on City Hall to fulfill their promise to relocate the troubled shelter. The letter emphasized the unacceptable nature of the recent violent attack, which claimed the lives of three victims, one of whom was stabbed near the Kips Bay center.

The Alexandria Center has invested $1.5 billion to expand the city’s only commercial life science campus, but the presence of the Bellevue Men’s Shelter has created security challenges. Despite promises made in 2006 to move the shelter, City Hall has failed to deliver on this commitment and instead continues to pour money into maintaining it.

The shelter serves as an intake center for homeless men, including those recently released from Rikers Island for serious felony offenses. It has gained notoriety as one of the most dangerous shelters in the city, posing a constant threat to the safety of the Alexandria Center’s tenants and their research.

Incidents of vagrants flashing weapons and harassing people near the center have forced the Alexandria Center to implement strict security measures. However, City Planning officials have hindered these efforts by raising enforcement issues and ignoring concerns about the shelter’s unsafe facade and deteriorating structure.

The leaders of the Alexandria Center have called on City officials to create and enforce a security plan for the shelter’s neighbor and support the center’s security protocols to ensure the safety of their tenants. They have urged City Hall to explore ways to close or relocate the shelter altogether to eliminate the ongoing safety threats.

As the city grapples with the issue of mentally ill homeless individuals, the recent stabbing spree serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by inadequate shelter facilities. Mayor Eric Adams has pledged to take action to remove troubled vagrants from the streets and provide them with psychiatric care to prevent future tragedies.

City Hall officials have yet to respond to the concerns raised by the Alexandria Center, but the urgency of the situation demands immediate action to address the safety risks posed by the Bellevue Men’s Shelter. The lives of innocent individuals and the vital research being conducted at the Alexandria Center depend on swift and decisive measures to ensure their safety and well-being.
